At Enquiro we have a number of core values that we feel strongly about. One of which is recognizing and responding to the needs of Others.... our team, our clients and our community. Yesterday we held a surprise event, the first annual Enquiro Apprentice Day. Based on the popular NBC television series the Apprentice featuring Donald Trump.
Only our CEO, Gord Hotchkiss and Executive Vice President knew what the event was going to be. At 10:00 am the rest of the team was called to the Board Room for a debriefing. The Enquiro team was divided up into two teams. From there we had to select a team name a team leader and charity. Once we selected our charity, we were given 4 hours to raise money for our charity of choice to see who could raise the most money. The team that I was a part of "The Big Wheelers" chose the Kelowna Bikes for Kids Charity as part of the Kelowna Jumpstart program. Each team was given 10 pairs of of Kelowna Rockets hockey tickets (donated by the Kelowna Rockets) to use any way we saw fit.
About Bikes for Kids
The Bikes for Kids program is a a program that gives away bikes to children who cannot afford them. The bikes are purchased at cost from local shops and are presented to children in need. In addition to the bike the children receive:
helmets
bike locks
additional safety items
In 2007, Bikes for Kids gave away 100 bikes for children.
50 bikes went to the Everyone Gets to Play Network
50 bikes were delivered to School District 23.
We chose Bikes for Kids because this is a charitable cause that doesn't get a lot of promotion and really needs to raise money for the bikes. Not to mention the fact that of course children all hold a special place in our hearts. The other Enquiro team selected a children's charity in the Children's Hospital.
So the battle was on. Donald Trump would be proud. With only 4 hours we had to see who could raise the most money for the charity. We went about raising funds for our repsective charities. Local TV station CHBC had their cameras rolling throughout the campaign. Both teams did an exceptional job. Members of Enquiro put their heads down, rolled up their sleeves and began to raise funds for the children.
We contacted local radio stations to run live auctions
We contacted a number of local businesses (with many unsuccessful results unfortunately)
We went online and set up a Facebook Group search for "Enquiro Big Wheelers" (with only four hours this proved somewhat unsuccessful but long term is a great idea for reaching out to friends...)
We looked for Corporate Donations (not very successful with only four hours to obtain the pledges)
We reached out to personal contacts (our most successful avenue.
In the end we raised $3, 000 for Kelowna Bikes for Kids. That's 30 bikes! Fantastic. As part of this total . Kelowna Cycle donated two brand new bikes complete with helmets. What an amazing four hours it was.
It's All About the Children
The fact that we can help put a smile on a children's face is a tremendous feeling. Children are the future. I have been reminded about a song entitled "When the Children Cry" recorded by the band White Lion.
Little child
Dry your crying eyes
How can I explain
The fear you feel inside
´cause you were born
Into this evil world
Where man is killing man
and no one knows just why
What have we become
Just look what we have done
All that we destroyed
You must build again
When the children cry
Let them know we tried
´cause when the children sings
The new world begins....
I am extremely proud of my team. Although we ended up losing competition to the other Enquiro team who raised an amazing $7,000 in 4 hours for the Children's hospital, we will make a difference in the lives of 30 children. You cannot put any price on that. I want to thank everyone that donated. I especially want to thank a friend of mine (who I have not seen in 20 years) Chris Mair who is CEO of Hellbent Games Inc. based in Vancouver for his generous donation. (I had contacted him via Facebook... ahh technology). Speaking of technology, if you would like to donate visit the Enquiro Big Wheelers Facebook page or feel free to contact me .
Enquiro does it right. To raise $10, 0000 in four hours is an amazing feat. Great job everyone, what a tremendous experience. And to think that we did this all for the children. That is the greatest part about this entire event. We will be able to put a smile on a number of children's faces.
