Are You Excited for SMX West?

You know I'll admit that I have been critical of some of the search conferences that have taken place over the last couple of years. When SMX debuted last June, I was a little critical of that show as well. My thoughts were like, "... here we go again, same speakers, same topics, same tactics etc." I questioned whether there was any strategic though leadership coming out of these conferences. Now granted I did not attend all of the conferences I was hearing a lot of rumblings from folks that were in attendance. This included feedback from clients, industry professionals, marketers, search marketers, CEOs, first time web designers, veteran site owners and such. The common theme was that there was a lack of strategies being communicated. Lots of tactics and such but what about integrated strategy that could be applied? So I wasn't the only one who was critical of the conferences.

The folks at Third Door Media aim to change this perception and I think that they just might do it with SMX West. In fact Rand Fishkin over at SEOmoz said it better than I ever could with his post on, The Secret Value of Attending Conferences - and Why SMX West is a Must-Attend. In his piece Rand lists a nuber of excellent points as to why SMX West will be a great show. Rand goes on to state:
Breakthrough Content from Everyone - Chris & Danny have built up a lot of terrific relationships over their 12+ years in the industry (each), and now they get to call on many of their friends and contacts at the engines, from startups (Louis Monier from Cuill sounds like he may actually have something truly revolutionary in search - unlike Mahalo or Wikia) to companies and independents, to help give back. I have very high expectations.
I was looking at the agenda for the sessions for the show a number of weeks ago and I was extremely surprised to see the amount of new sessions scheduled for the show. In fact I couldn't believe how many sessions there were that I would like to attend. My only dilemma is that there are a number of sessions taking place at the same time... so how to be in two (or three places) at once? This is a good problem to have.

I love the fact that Third Door Media is promoting the SMX content difference and the fact that "Quality programming is the number one concern of this experienced team." From the looks of things, Danny Sullivan, Chris Sherman and their entire team have done a great job at addressing issues that have plagued past shows. Seeing is believing and I plan to see if the Search Marketing Expo can live up ti its hype. I want to thank Third Door Media President, Chris Elwell for his personal invitation to an SMX show. I look forward to attending.
