A few weeks back we posted our thoughts on the idea of a Google Phone being released soon. At the time rumors were strong that Google (GOOG) was on the verge of a major announcement regarding a G-Phone or Google Phone. Well Business Week posed an interesting thought on the whole idea with the idea of free phone service from Google.
According to the article,
Wireless-industry consultants and marketing executives with knowledge of Google's plans say it has been showing prototypes of a new phone to handset manufacturers and network operators for a couple of months.
So while Google may not be ready for an immediate announcement, there is no doubt that we can expect to see a Google Phone on the market within the next 12-18 months. This makes sense as it gives Google even more time to dissect the Apple (AAPL) iPhone and make any necessary improvements. Google has downplayed any discussion about the possibility of a G-Phone which in itself adds further validity to the reports. Still many industry resources expect an announcement on the Google Phone by the second half of 2008. All of these rumors have sparked a spike in the worth of Google shares as the share price closed at $582.55 on Monday. This represents a new high for Google.
I'm pretty sure we'll see something sooner rather than later - this is what I'm hearing: http://www.rizzn.com/2007/10/gphone-final-countdown-starts-here.asp
