Rumors are getting stronger that Google will be announcing the release of their Google Phone in the next week or two. Google (GOOG) continues to downplay the rumors, but if you think about it, Google is all about innovation and the "Google Phone" has the potential to be a very innovative product. According to the Boston Globe, Rich Miner, a Google executive has shown the Google Phone to a handful of executives in the Boston area.
According to Google spokeswoman Erin Fors,
"Mobile is an important focus for Google globally, and the team is reflective of that focus - there are people around the world working on a variety of Google mobile products..."
Some that have seen the Google Phone product have stated that it is more simple and less "flasy" than Apple's iPhone. Reports also suggest that some prototypes of the Google Phone make use of a small QWERTY keyboard as opposed to a touch screen as featured on the iPhone. Of course with the rumors many are suggesting that the Google Phone or G-Phone or whatever it will be dubbed may be an iPhone killer. Personally I don't think so as the two will co-exist as they will be different products. Competiton is great especially in the mobile device market. The success of both depend on the consumer. Whichever device, the one that provides the best value to the customer is the one that will experience the most success. Three things that Google is known for include:
Innovation - you can bet the Google Phone will have a number of new/innovative features.
Simplicity - Google seems to focus on simplicty for the user. Think about Google's simple search engine results page, their simple (but robust) analytics package with Google Analytics, and of course a number of other products such as Gmail and the like.
Inexpensive - Google traditionally will purchase technology, improve upon it and more often than not give it away for free. Expect the Google Phone to be available for less than the iPhone and other similar mobile products.
The one thing that I hope Google has factored in, is use in locales other than the United States. I live in Canada and currently there is no provider/carrier for the iPhone (otherwise I probably would have purchased one..) so hopefully the Google Phone will be available in Canada with full functionality. Rumors persist that Google will make an announcement about the Google Phone shortly after Labour Day.... that means this week. Excitement continues to build.
