I'm always looking for new means of gaining competitive intelligence. There are various resources out there, with many of them being replicas of each other. However once in a while I come across a new site or tool that is very handy or has a lot of potential. The latest "competitive analysis" tool that I have come across is something called SpyFu.
Try a search for a key phrase using this tool. I did a search for "seo" and I was presented with a variety of information including:
- cost per click for this phrase
- top adWords results
- information about related phrases
- top organic results for this phrase
- related terms
- related concepts
- and more
While it is still in beta, there is great potential for this tool as it can be used for checking up on your competition and as a means for finding links for your site. You can click the “Industries” link where you are presented with a list of industries. From here you can drill down and click on the Wholesale/Retail link where you are presented with another list of results. Continue clicking through until you find the industry which most closely matches your own and you will be able to see the top competing sites, as well as other related information. This can be handy when researching competitors or keywords related to your industry. You can use SpyFu to discover exactly which keywords your competitors are ranking for in Google's organic search and what position they hold.

Can also give KeywordSpy.com a try for a keyword research tool, with results actually reflecting what advertisers are using at the current time.
