Last year I made my first trip to the Silicon Valley as I attended SES in San Jose. One of the things that amazed me was the number of high tech firms in the area. Being from Canada, I knew that San Jose was in the heart of the Silicon Valley, but I didn't know just how many high tech firms were actually located in the Silicon Valley. I was aware that the area was a hub for high tech businesses but I was amazed at the number of high tech firms in this small geographical area.
Of course everyone is aware that the following firms are located in the Silicon Valley:
Yahoo! Inc. YHOO
701 First Avenue Sunnyvale, CA 94089
Adobe Systems Incorporated ADBE
345 Park Avenue San Jose, CA 95110
Cisco Systems Inc. CSCO
170 West Tasman Drive San Jose, CA 95134
Google Inc. GOOG
1600 Amphitheatre Parkway Mountain View, CA 94043
There are also companies such as:
Net Manage Inc. NETM
20883 Stevens Creek Blvd. Cupertino, CA 95014
eBay Inc EBAY
2145 Hamilton Avenue San Jose, CA 95125
According to Rich's Guides, there are 8,000 plus high tech companies in Northern California and 8,000 plus high tech companies in Southern California. This got me thinking about how many high tech jobs that there are in the area and how competitive it must be for the companies to acquire staff. The San Jose Mercury News discussed how companies such as Yahoo continue to hire numerous especially in areas such as algorithmic search. With the high number of high tech firms in the area, you would think that finding a job in the area would be easy. In fact this is not always the case as competition for these positions is strong and the cost of living is high. The Silicon Valley is a nice place to visit, but I'm not sure if I could live there.... although it would be fun for a while don't you think?
